Detailed Itinerary
13 Days Budget Primate and Wildlife Safari, Gorilla Trekking, Chimpanzee tracking and Wildlife Safaris in Uganda.
Day 1: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park
Our company guide will pick you up from your hotel at around 9:00 am or from Entebbe international airport and then transfer to Lake Mburo National Park.
Lake Mburo National Park located in south western region of Uganda park has a variety of animals such as zebra, hippopotamus, impala, warthog, common eland, African buffalo, jackal, African leopard, and over three hundred (300) bird species. At 260 square kilometres, the park is the smallest of Uganda’s savannah national parks.
The drive from Kampala to the park will take around 4-5 hours with a stopover at the equator to take some photos. Check in at leopard rest camp where you will have dinner and spend the night.
Day 2: Game drive and transfer to Mgahinga National Park
After breakfast an early breakfast at the camp you will do a morning game drive through the park. The game drive will take between 4-6 hours and you will expect to see animals like; zebra, impala, eland, buffalo, oribi, waterbuck, leopard, hippo, hyena, topi and reedbuck among others.
Some of the bird species that live in the park include; Coqui Francolin, Emerald-spotted Wood, Rufous-bellied Heron, Bateleur, Brown-chested Lapwing, Grey Crowned Crane, Bare-faced Go-away-bird, Red-faced Barbet, Green Wood-hoopoe, Red-headed Lovebird, Ross’s Turaco, Black-bellied Bustard, Nubian Woodpecker, and many more and you will expect to expect some of them.
You will return to the lodge, have lunch and then check out. You will then transfer to Mgahinga a journey that will take you around 5 hours. Check in at Lake Chahafi resort where you will have dinner and spend the night.
Day 3: Golden monkey tracking in Mgahinga National Park
After breakfast at the resort, you will drive to mgahinga national park headquarters where you will be briefed by the park guide about the activity. You will then start the hike through the tropical forest, you will then proceed to the bamboo zone where golden monkeys live.
Golden monkeys are only found in the Virunga region and kahuzi biega. This species was previously thought to be a subspecies of the blue monkey (Cercopithecus mitis), and the two are similar overall, but the golden monkey has a golden-orange patch on the upper flanks and back.
Some fitness level will be required while trekking these monkeys because you will see them jumping from one bamboo tree to another and you have to keep following them till you have seen enough. This activity takes between 3-4 hours. You will return to the lodge and then rest. Dinner and overnight at the resort.
Day 4: Mount Sabyinyo Volcano hike
After breakfast at the resort, you will drive to sabyinyo hike starting point where you will be briefed by the park guide about the hike and then be assigned porters (who are hired at the base).
You will start the hike through the tropical forests where you will expect to see some monkey species that live in the forest as well as different forest bird species. You will them continue through the bamboo and the montane forests.
As you hike, you will have views if the Virunga, valleys, ridges and the thick vegetation. Sabyinyo hike is a full day activity, the hike to the top take about 5 hours and then descending take about 3 hours. Some people use more hours or even less depending on the hiker’s fitness level. The driver will be waiting for you at the base and then transfer back to the resort. Dinner and overnight as above.
Day 5: Gorilla trekking
After breakfast at the resort, you will drive to the park headquarters where have your permits verified and then be briefed by the park guide. You will be let by the park guide into the forest to look for the gorillas.
The activity will take you around 4-6 hours depending on where the gorillas are that day. As you track the gorillas you will expect to spot various bird species that live in the forest and also some other primates. When you find them, you will be given an hour to see them go by their daily life and also take photos.
You will see them feed on bamboo shoots and if the family you are tracking has babies, you will see them playing around and can even get so close to the tourists. You are not allowed to touch.
You will return to the resort refresh and have lunch. Dinner and overnight as above.
Day 6: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park
After breakfast at the resort, you will check out and transfer to Queen Elizabeth national park. The journey will take you around 6 hours with a stopover in Ishaka town for lunch.
At the top of the Kyambura escarpment, you will have beautiful views of the rift valley and some of the water bodies in it. You will check in at bush lodge where you will have dinner and spend the night.
Day 7: Game drive and boat cruise
After an early morning breakfast at the lodge, you will take a morning game drive through the park. the game drive will take about 5 hours and you will expect to see animals like lions, elephants, buffalo, leopard, waterbuck, kobs, warthog, hippo among others and different bird species.
Return to the lodge and have lunch. You will then drive to mweya peninsula where you will take a boat cruise at 2pm on the kazinga channel. The kazinga channel is a 40 km long water body that joins Lake George to Lake Edward. The cruise will take around 2 hours and as you cruise you will expect to see lots of hippos in water, buffalos, crocodiles, monitor lizards, elephants as the quench their thirst or swimming.
You will also expect to see some water bird species like African fish eagle, cormorants, pelicans. Yellow billied stork, marabou stork, African jacana, among others. Dinner and overnight at the bush lodge.
Day 8: Game drive and transfer to Kibale Forest National Park
After breakfast at the lodge, you will do another game drive where you will expect to see some of the animals that live in the park like lions, elephants, buffalo, kobs, hippos, waterbucks among others. You will return to the lodge, have lunch and check out. You will them transfer to Kibale Forest National Park.
This journey will take around 3 hours and as you drive you will spot the rwenzori ranges at a distance and if the weather is clear enough, you might spot the snow in the Rwenzori. Dinner and overnight at Kibale Forest Camp.
Day 9: Chimpanzee tracking and nature walks
After breakfast at the camp, you will drive to Kibale Forest National Park headquarters where you will have your permits verified and then be briefed by the park guide about the activity. You will then set out into the forest to look for the chimps.
As you track the chimps, you will expect to spot other primates that live in the forest like monkeys, baboons, mangabey and others. You will also spot various bird species that live in the forest like the great blue turaco.
Unlike the gorillas, you will not find the chimps in one place, you will expect to see them jumping from one tree to another as they go by their daily activities and you will keep following them. Return to the camp and have lunch.
Later in the afternoon, you will take a walk to the bigodi swamp area where you will expect to see some monkeys, and baboons. You will also expect to see various birds’ species, and if lucky, you might spot the rare shoebill stork.
Day 10: Transfer to Murchison falls national park
After breakfast at the camp, you will transfer Murchison falls national park. The drive will you around 7 hours with a stopover along the way for lunch.
Check in at Red Chilli where you will have dinner and spend the night.
Day 11: Game drive and boat cruise
After breakfast at the camp, you will take a morning drive through the park where you will expect to see animals like, lions, leopard, hyena, elephant, buffalo, kobs, Jackson’s hartebeests, dik dik, zebra, giraffe, waterbuck, warthog, gazelles’, among many more. You will also spot some savannah birds that live in the park. You will then return to the camp and have lunch.
In the afternoon, you will take a boat cruise on the Victoria Nile which is part of the great river Nile. The ride will take between 2-3 hours and as you cruise, you will expect to spot animals like hippos, buffalo, elephants, Crocodiles, monitor lizard, and some monkeys that live in the vegetation around the water body.
You will also expect to spot some water bird species like; pied kingfishers, pelicans, cormorants, yellow bellied stork, African fish eagle, marabou stork, African jacana among others. Dinner and overnight as above.
Day 12: Game drive and transfer to ziwa rhino sanctuary
After breakfast at the camp, you will take a drive through the park where you will expect to see animals like; hippos, elephant, buffalo, leopard, zebra, giraffe, hyena, gazelles, warthog, waterbucks, dik dik among others. You will return to the camp, have lunch and transfer to ziwa rhino sanctuary.
Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch located in Nakasongola district is the proud home of the only wild rhinos in Uganda. The Rhino re-introduction project is a project of Rhino Fund Uganda and Uganda Wildlife Authority. Presently the sanctuary is home to 22 southern white rhinos.
Check in at Amuka lodge where you will have dinner and spend the night.
Day 13: Rhino tracking and transfer to Kampala
After breakfast at the lodge, you will be briefed by the guide at the sanctuary and then start activity. The walk will take around 2 hours. You will expect to see the rhinos feeding or resting in the sanctuary.
You will return to the lodge and have lunch. You will then drive to Kampala for about 3 hours. The guide will drop you at your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe or at Entebbe airport for your flight back home.
